A “mobile-first” approach involves designing a desktop site starting with the mobile version, which is then adapted to larger screens (contrary to the traditional approach of starting with a desktop site and then adapting it to smaller screens). A mobile-first approach means building your website with your mobile users in mind, with the main goal of improving these mobile users’ experience on your site.

Although Mobile responsive and mobile first have some of the same ingredients, but their methods, approaches, and strategies are totally different.

Mobile responsive is an approach to technological web design where CSS is used to adapt the website to the platform on which it is displayed. The coding is more difficult, and the interface still always sets desktop specifications at the forefront. In other words, the website was initially developed for laptop users and then made to function on handheld devices.

Mobile First is a programming technique, on the other hand. While it can use a mobile responsive platform, it first and foremost addresses the needs of mobile users. You design a website that considers the bulk of users (on phones) first, rather than making a laptop website and only pushing it to fit in a mobile package.
